Arizona pounded and raced the ball inside, while guard Kerr Kriisa added a bit of perimeter swagger, as the Wildcats beat Indiana 89-75 in a showdown of Top 25 teams Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden.
Indiana, ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, was also playing for the third straight game without starting wing Jalen Hood-Schifino because of back issues.
Then Kriisa came back again to lift the Wildcats. He made a technical free throw off a technical foul on Indiana’s Malik Reneau, then hit a 3-pointer a minute later to give UA a 72-60 lead. With 5:11 left, Indiana’s Miller Kopp hit a 3-pointer to cut UA’s lead to 76-71, though Arizona pulled ahead by double digits in the final minutes.
The Wildcats, driving inside often and getting to the free throw line, built a 27-8 lead by the time Pelle Larsson made a layup with 11:02 left. Behind a vocal crowd of Hoosier fans, Indiana managed to cut the Wildcats’ lead to as little as five points before UA pulled back ahead into double-digits toward the end of the first half.
