Arlington traffic engineers eye 40 intersections to help mitigate traffic on parade day
To ease congestion, engineers eye 40 intersections across 160 square feet of monitors at the city’s Traffic Management Center.
Chris Funches, traffic engineer for the city, said because this is a first, expected crowd size is unknown, but they are planning for more than a typical game day that brings 40,000-plus fans to Globe Life Field. He said the Rangers’ title pushes things to a new level for the city and the community.“Everybody is really excited,” he said. “Public works, along with police and fire departments are all working right now to make sure everything is set up and ready to go as far as traffic control.
“The cameras allow the TMC to see live traffic information for traffic control setups, congestion, pedestrian movements, safety incidents that might create a traffic conflict, train crossings, and assistance to field crews, police, and stadium partners,” Funches said. “We are able to see if traffic flow is continuous, stagnant, or has a queue of vehicles waiting to make traffic movements that need more green time.
Funches said it’s all about teamwork, from crews rearranging barricades, to police officers directing traffic and helping pedestrians.
