The Orchard County are bidding to lift the Sam Maguire Cup for the second time having won their first title in 2002 while the Tribesmen are without a senior title since 2001
After 63 games across 16 weeks of action, two teams are left standing as Armagh and Galway clash in the final of the 2024 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
While today’s final is a novel pairing, the two counties have met three times in the last three seasons and those games suggest there is nothing to separate the sides. An error from goalkeeper Shaun Patton gifted Galway’s Paul Conroy a goal in the first half and the Tribesmen will be back at Headquarters to take on Armagh on Sunday, July 28.
McBrearty converted the free to level the contest at 0-14 to 1-11 with 50 minutes played, but Jim McGuinness’s side only scored one more point as their scoring efficiency deserted them in the closing stages. Armagh fans massively outnumbered Kerry in the 55,548 crowd and most would have been hoping to avoid penalties after the Orchard County’s recent bad luck in shootouts.
Armagh rallied with back-to-back scores from Niall Grimley and another from Rian O’Neill, but Kerry were good value for their four-point lead at half-time with Clifford and Diarmuid O’Connor scoring. A wayward effort from Clifford was kept in play by Diarmuid O’Connor and Paul Murphy palmed the ball into the Armagh net despite protests from the Orchard players of a square-ball infringement.
Although Paudie Clifford momentarily pushed the lead back out to two, Armagh had the momentum and drew level with two classy points from Campbell before a superb score from O’Neill gave Armagh the lead for the first time in the game. However, the impressive Turbitt had the final say when he opted to fist over Armagh’s final point rather than shoot for goal.
After beating Derry by points in round two, Armagh were slow and ponderous in the first half and kicked six wides with a brace of points from Shane Walsh giving Galway a 0-8 to 0-6 advantage at the break.
