New story: The U.S. Army in Alaska on Thursday released the name of the soldier killed Tuesday by a bear in a remote corner of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson

The U.S. Army on Thursday, May 12, 2022, identified the soldier killed by a bear on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, as Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant, 30, an infantryman from the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was from St. Augustine, Florida.in a remote corner of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

“Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant, 30, an infantryman from the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was transported to the JBER hospital after the mauling where he was declared dead,” said a press release from USARAK issued Thursday.According to the military, Plant was originally from Saint Augustine, Florida, and enlisted in the Army in 2015, serving at bases in Georgia and North Carolina before being stationed at JBER in July 2021.

“He always had a smile on his face, he always went above and beyond what was asked of him, and he served as an inspiration to all who had the privilege to know him. His loss is deeply felt within our organization and we offer our sincere condolences to friends and family,” said Lt. Col. David J. Nelson, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
