Engels is one of Celtic's top priorities to replace Matt O'Riley and Derek Rae watched the game that proves he's ready
Arne Engels is technically good enough to step straight into Matt O'Riley's shoes - and enough of an all-rounder to fill the massive void left by the Dane.
Broadcaster Rae however believes he may prove to be well worth that outlay. He watched his debut against Borussia Dortmund in January 2023, where Engels was thrown straight into the engine room. Up against a rising Jude Bellingham, he held his own with an assist in a thriller his side eventually lost 4-3. And Rae believes he's only gone from strength to strength since then.
"With Engels, Celtic would be getting a good all-round player and a player that also takes corners for his current club, as he can deliver a good ball into the box. Anybody who is a defensive midfielder who is taking corners tells you that there are aspects to his game that are more than what just your run-of-the-mill central defensive midfield players would typically offer."
"In general terms, he did go under the radar . However, I was working that day with Hannes Wolf - who is now a very senior figure at the German FA - and he knew all about Engels. Wolf thought it was very interesting that his new team were putting him straight in against Dortmund.
