Raya has started Arsenal's last two games and Ramsdale will have to fight to regain his place in the starting line-up
In his role as pundit for CBS this very week, the great Peter Schmeichel rubbished Arteta’s notion that bringing in Raya was in Arsenal’s best interests. His view is that a high level of consistency in a goalkeeper’s performance only comes from knowing the throne you’re sat on isn’t being used in a game of musical chairs, where only the one with the quickest reactions wears the crown.
The Arsenal manager admits that he has regretted not substituting his goalkeeper mid-game on more than one occasion and his reluctance to do so stems from the same thought Schmeichel has: a fear for the mental repercussions it could have on the goalkeeper seemingly under threat. Let’s wind things back a few years when Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal replaced Jasper Cillessen with Tim Krul for their World Cup penalty shoot-out win over Costa Rica at the 2014 World Cup? It was seen as a big risk at the time, and viewed by many as a slight on the abilities of Cillessen. It definitely would have been felt as an embarrassment for many a goalkeeper to be replaced in such a manner.
This is the point Arteta wants to get to with his keepers during the course of 90 minutes. If the state of a game has changed and the one outstanding attribute required to dull the greater threat posed by the opposition now is sitting behind you on the bench, then why not bring them into play? Football is a game of problems and solutions, and if we see it that way, we stop ego getting in the way of doing what we need to get the right result.
