Returning to a live, in-person ceremony for the first time in three years, the Off-Broadway community came together for the 2022 Lucille Lortel Awards
.
The night was all about celebrating the magic and uniqueness of this special medium. “Off-Broadway is so vital to New York and the American theater scene because it’s still a place where you can take chances. All artists can be seen and not get swept aside for the sake of commercialism and capitalism. It’s still an art making space and not just a product making space,” said Whitney White who directedwhich was nominated for five Lucille Lortel awards.
On the red carpet before the festivities the nominees had the opportunity to chat about their shows. “is right on time,” shared Stephanie Berry who costars in the play that received five nominations. “Here is a seminal playwright who is saying something and breaking walls to express the complexities of our life and political issues.
Also, as many noted there’s an intimacy to Off-Broadway shows. To be considered Off-Broadway, the theaters must contain between 99 and 499 seats. “I love it because the audience is right there with you. It’s almost like a conversation rather than a presentation,” observed Christopher Sieber. Hisco-star and awards cohost, Jennifer Simard added, “A lot of shows get picked up to go to Broadway. So you saw it when. And it’s really fascinating to see the changes.
