Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo putts the ball on the 18th green during the first round of the ClubCorp Classic at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas, Friday, April 22, 2022.IRVING –Steven Alker and Tony Romo emerged as the respective players to beat following the second round of the inaugural ClubCorp Classic presented by Choctaw Casinos & Resorts Saturday at Las Colinas Country Club.
After an opening round of 68, Alker got off to a fast start, following up a birdie on the second hole with 30-foot sidehill eagle putt on the third. He added three more birdies on his incoming nine. “Today would have been a day where it would have been very tough for me after an early bogey,’’ Romo said, “but at this point I know I’m going to get back on track just because I know where the clubface is for the first time. I can feel where it is at and I’m able to control the golf ball much better.’’
“It’s a family affair with my husband on the bag and the kids walking around,’’ the 72-time LPGA winner said. “It’s easy for me to forget about three-putts, bad bounces and not the score I want.’’ Among the half-dozen tied for third at 5-under is 52-year-old Tim “Lumpy’' Herron who played his final five holes in even par, but in an unconventional fashion with three birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey on the par-4 15th, a hole he was lamenting afterward: “It was one of the better rounds I’ve played all year and then I fricking make a double hitting a good shot.’’
