Several European countries, including Iceland, the Czech Republic, Poland and France, have begun to allow film and television production under new COVID-19 guidelines.
Europe is open for business. Sort of. Several European countries, including traditional international production locations, such as the Czech Republic and Iceland, have allowed film and television shoots to re-start after shutdowns due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
But digging down into the details, the rules for shooting vary from territory to territory and in some cases within a single country. Spain, for example, has opened up shooting in areas with very low rates of COVID-19 transmission, such as the Canary Islands and the Valencia region, but is being much more restrictive in major cities like Madrid or Barcelona, which still have high contagion levels.
In much of the rest of Europe there are major restrictions on travel from non-EU countries. Europe’s external borders will remain closed for most travel at least until mid-June. . The Czech Republic is a major hub for international shoots. Amazon Studios has two TV series prepped to shoot here — the second season of Orlando Bloom-starrer— when COVID-19 hit. Disney+ seriesCzech regulations require foreign actors and crew members to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before being allowed to enter the country. They will be given a second test within 72 hours of arrival and remain quarantined until they receive a negative result, which usually comes within 24 hours.
The shooting regulations limit on-set groups to 50 people and require sets to be closed to the general public. Several areas, including public parks, gardens and cemeteries, will remain off-limits for shoots, as will the use of drones over sites managed by the city of Paris.
