Lonnie Walker IV of the San Antonio Spurs shoots during first-half NBA action against the Sacramento Kings in the AT&T Center on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021.The next Spurs championship parade will float right down the River Walk, just like the previous five did.
Now, any time other cities are mentioned in connection with the Spurs, there is going to be a bit of a freakout, whether or not it’s warranted. Somewhere in the DNA of every silver-and-black supporter there is existential dread dating back to 30 years ago, when the threat of the city’s only major-league franchise packing up and moving away seemed visceral. For many that fear never completely went away.
If they needed a new practice facility, they could have just built one. Instead, they doubled down on their pledge to stay by teaming with Bexar County on a project they say will further connect them to the community. Or that they would try to add a piece of Austin’s booming population and economy to what the Spurs already have?
So it’s no wonder the Spurs would look to get creative when it comes to broadening the audience. Austin’s new Moody Center seats only around 10,000 for basketball, so it wouldn’t be a fit for more than a couple of games per season. But the hope is that if fans there get a taste of the Spurs, they will feel more of a connection to the team and will become more likely to drive to games at the AT&T Center, or to watch on TV.
