With Tesla shares in freefall once again and the company burning cash and customers losing confidence, who are the companies looking at rescuing and possibly taking over Tesla.

. But even if Ford is able to convert that investment to competitive and even leading EV versions of its F150 pickup and its SUVs, it still lacks a legitimate luxury brand. Ford management believes it can extract big profit margins from its Ford branded vehicles. And it continues to invest in Lincoln vehicles like the Navigator and Nautilus. Ford is forecasting perhaps adapting Rivian's approach to long-range EV prower to those vehicles.

Wildcard: Can Elon Musk partner with one of the truly traditional, legacy-filled Detroit automakers with a conventional corporate structure? Can Ford actually manage an acquired brand? It failed miserably at bringing companies like Jaguar/LandRover and Volvo into line.GM lost out on the Rivian investment it was seeking to Ford, and wants to have a silver bullet for EV expansion and consumer acceptance.

Wildcard: Same as for Ford. Can Musk do business with a conventional automaker? Musk does have extraordinary vision and an innovative mind. But running a car company is a complicated thing. Start to imagine a scenario in which GM owns either 49% or 51% of Tesla, and Musk has to only focus on product innovation. GM's people relieves him of production oversight, logistics, customer service, litigation, etc.GM and Ford would face an issue with Musk if they owned a majority of Tesla.

Also, could either of these companies keep Musk in the fold? And does the brand deliver on its value if usk is not at the product helm?"If I were a traditional automaker, I'd be thinking the 'cool factor' may not transfer to a traditional auto company," said Kristin Dziczek, vice president of industry, labor & economics at the Center for AutomotiveChina has a lot of money. Lord knows. A handful of Chinese car companies have rattled their swords about entering the U.S. market with their Chinese brands.
