In addition to making fans with his exploits on the baseball field, Astros third baseman Alex Bregman has earned plenty more over the years through his philanthropy.The Astros held their first Autism Awareness night Tuesday at Minute Maid Park, and the guest of honor who threw out the first pitch was someone close to Alex Bregman’s heart.
Bregman’s godson, 9-year-old Brady Columbus, is the son of Bregman’s longtime hitting instructor, Jason Columbus, and the chief inspiration behind the Astros star’s long history of involvement with autism-focused philanthropies and organizations., was in contact with the Astros about holding an Autism Awareness night when the club asked if Brady would throw out the first pitch — with Bregman catching behind the plate, of course.
“He’s been practicing with his dad in the backyard for the last two weeks, and he’s really nervous about it,” Bregman said. “He’s like, ‘I don’t want to mess it up. I don’t want to mess it up.’ But today his class, I think, got him fired up and got him cheered up. He’s ready to do it today. They were cheering him on, so it’s gonna be fun.”
Brady, who was diagnosed with autism at age 3 while Bregman was playing at LSU, now attends school in Katy. In 2019, his positive experience using iPads to communicate and learn in school gave Bregman the idea to raise money to distribute iPads to classrooms in Houston and his hometown of Albuquerque, N.M.
