The Astros promoted baseball operations employee Tommy Kawamura to an on-field coaching role as a “game-planning coach” on manager Dusty Baker’s staff for the 2023 season.
The team announced Kawamura’s addition in a Thursday news release touting the return of Baker’s entire coaching staff for next season. Kawamura spent the past two seasons as a manager of advance scouting and accompanied the team on road trips. After a collegiate career at Willamette University, Kawamura began his Astros tenure as a development coach in 2015. He transitioned to the baseball operations staff in 2017 and has held roles there ever since.
Kawamura’s addition gives Baker an 11-person coaching staff. Hitting coach Alex Cintrón received a two-year contract extension after interviewing for the Toronto Blue Jays bench coach job last month while bench coach Joe Espada returns after interviewing for two managerial vacancies elsewhere. Third-base coach Gary Pettis, quality control coach Dan Firova and bullpen coach Michael Collins will all return next season, too. Houston made one title change for a returning staffer: labeling Jason Kanzler as an “assistant hitting coach” after Kanzler spent last season as a “major league coach.”
