WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Astros optioned Forrest Whitley to minor league camp on Sunday, signaling an official start of a crucial season for the former top pitching prospect. Whitley’s demotion does not come as a surprise, but the timing is somewhat awkward. He had his best start of Grapefruit League play on Saturday, scattering four hits and two runs in three strike-filled innings against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Whitley never had a chance to make the team’s opening day roster, but he is a crucial piece of its starting pitching depth. As Houston’s major league pitchers build their pitch counts and throw more innings, fewer frames are available in Grapefruit League play for minor leaguers. Optioning Whitley on Sunday will allow the Astros to build his pitch count in minor league camp.
This season is Whitley’s last with minor league options, making it far more crucial that he blossoms into something valuable for the major league team.
