A $600-a-week federal supplement to state unemployment benefits, offered by a prior round of relief, lapsed at the end of July, throwing jobless Americans' incomeHouse Democrats passed a $3 trillion bill in May that would extend those $600 payments through early next year. Senate Republicans proposed a $1 trillion bill two weeks ago seeking to lower the relief to $200 a week in the short term.

The benefit would last until Dec. 6 or a $44 billion disaster-relief fund runs dry, whichever comes first.That's due to a restriction stipulating that eligible recipients must be getting at least $100 a week in state unemployment insurance benefits.Roughly 3% of those collecting unemployment insurance get less than $100 a week — implying about 1 million people, according to an analysis by Ernie Tedeschi, an economist at Evercore ISI.

There were about 13 million people getting benefits through that program as of mid-July, according to most recent Labor DepartmentTrump's order says states may satisfy their financial obligation by counting their current benefit outlays. But PUA is a federally funded program, meaning recipients don't getting state money.
