An attorney for MetroHealth System President and CEO Akram Boutros said Tuesday morning that the fired CEO was targeted because he raised the possible unauthorized hiring of the new MetroHealth CEO, Airica Steed.

Jason R. Bristol, attorney for Boutros, in a statement called the firing “the latest of a series of retaliatory acts against Dr. Boutros.”

“The Chair led a retaliatory charge against him for blowing the whistle on these practices,” Bristol said. “She targeted him for receiving bonuses that were also received by all eligible employees.”Cuyahoga County Councilman Dale Miller declined to comment, citing lack of information.Boutros, who will be taking legal action to dispute his firing, is the only employee forced to repay bonuses, Bristol said. Those payments were made Oct. 31, according to the board.

Monday’s statement from the board said an investigation showed Boutros had awarded himself the unauthorized bonuses between 2018 and 2022. Trustees were unaware of the bonuses, in violation of Boutros’ contract, the statement said. Boutros gave himself the bonuses after conducting his own “self-assessments” of his job performance, the statement said. The board said it had not given him permission to grade his own performance.
