An Aurora man who allegedly sped away from Naperville police officers after being observed accelerating so quickly that his tires screeched and smoked was later found to be in possession of an illegal gun, officials said.
The initial incident occurred about 9:40 p.m. Friday at Jackson Avenue and Main Street, a news release said. Two Naperville bicycle patrol officers stopped Anthony Favela-Diaz, 22, of the 2600 block of Creek View Road, about a block away on South Main Street but as they approached his 2012 Dodge Charger, he fled the scene and headed westbound on Aurora Avenue, the report said.
Favela-Diaz was charged with one count each of aggravated fleeing and eluding and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, both class 4 felonies, as well as disobeying a stop sign, disobeying a traffic control signal and squealing or screeching tires.
“Enforcement of traffic laws not only protects our roadways but also can often lead to the discovery of other crimes, like illegal possession of a firearm in this case. This continues to be a priority for our department, and I’m proud of our officers’ efforts to enforce the law and protect our community.”
