Auschwitz survivor Celina Karp Biniaz shares her story of survival during a program at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library July 25, 2023. Biniaz’s parents, Irvin and Phyllis Karp, worked in a factory run by a friend of Oskar Schindler. Schindler, a German industrialist, saved the lives of over 1,000 Jews by employing them in factories in occupied Poland. Though Schindler planned for over 1,000 Jews on his list to be moved from a labor camp in Poland to Czechoslovakia in 1944, Biniaz and her mother were sent to Auschwitz by mistake.
After the war ended, Biniaz and her family came to the U.S., moving to Iowa as a teenager. She met her husband and became a school teacher for children with disabilities in New York, despite never having a formal education. Years later she retired with her husband in Camarillo, California, where she still lives.
