The Beastie Boys called it the “drop” and Carlos Andres Gomez knows it as “the Pinch,” but everyone knows the buildup to the moment the music pauses and then switches to the part that never fails to make you submit to its groove.
Gomez, a world-renowned poet who appeared at Indiana University Northwest Wednesday to perform during the campus’s Hispanic Heritage month, recalled a time “the Pinch” got him good in “A Communion of Miracles,” one of a handful of slam poems he performed outside the Anderson Library to a small group. He was out on a Saturday night waiting for the bass line to kick in when he locked eyes with “the most gorgeous human being.
“I have a friend who, when that happens to her, she said, ‘I don’t say a word. I make my face blank until they leave.’” As soon as they found out, “her abuela, her mom and three Tias” came to campus to figure out why she would do such a thing.
