The black rhino population in the U.S. grew by one on Christmas Eve with the arrival of a baby boy at the Potter Park Zoo in Michigan:
LANSING - The black rhino population in the U.S. grew by one Tuesday morning with the arrival of a baby boy at the Potter Park Zoo.
Zookeepers gathered in a tent outside the barn and watched the delivery through a video feed, officials said. They left mother and calf undisturbed for a few hours before going into the barn. There are fewer than 60 black rhinos living at U.S. zoos, and they produce an average of just two offspring a year, the zoo said. Potter Park is the only Michigan zoo that has black rhinos.
The zoo reported in early December that the delivery could come right away or as late as late January. Doppsee and her calf won't be visible to the public until spring, when the weather is warm enough for them to be out, zoo officials said. In the meantime, the zoo will post regular updates on its blog and social media sites, they said.
