The Dodgers had a one-run lead in the sixth inning when Evan Longoria and Corbin Carroll turned things around for the Diamondbacks, who handed the visitors a 6-3 defeat.

PHOENIX — When Clayton Kershaw made his first big-league start in May 2008, Corbin Carroll was finishing up first grade, becoming “an independent reader” and learning how to do simple addition and subtraction.

The 400th career start offered a fresh way to parse Kershaw’s place among the elite pitchers in baseball history. He is only the 34th pitcher in MLB history to start 400 or more games for one team. The loss dropped his career record at Chase Field to 8-11 in 22 starts, the most losses he has at any stadium other than Dodger Stadium and one of only two stadiums where he has a losing record – he is 2-3 in five career starts at Wrigley Field. By contrast, Kershaw is 13-1 against the Diamondbacks when facing them at Dodger Stadium.

Bumgarner is fighting off the onrushing shadows with stuff that no longer intimidates hitters. The Dodgers hit five balls in the first five innings that had exit velocities of 101 mph or higher. Two of them were home runs – solo shots by James Outman in the second inning and Chris Taylor in the fourth. The Dodgers also cashed in a leadoff double by Mookie Betts in the first inning.
