Locals have complained about the bad behaviour of visitors with one claiming 'they went into homes', 'sat on chairs' and 'climb on our walls'. Binibeca Vell residents were given £12,850 by the government last year to help deal with rubbish removal but the deal has not been renewed. The government wrote in its announcement of the ban that the 'correct interpretation' of the ban was that 'commercial establishments' have to be completely closed, and cannot simply shut display cases.
The mayor of Mallorca's capital, Palma, said one of his main objectives is to 'correct uncivil attitudes' and this applies as much to holidaymakers as it does to locals. According to the mayor, the current ordinance is too 'lax' and needs an increase in sanctions to promote one of the main objectives of his mandate: 'Correct uncivil attitudes.'
