Baltimore Mayor Jack Young urged President Trump to cancel an upcoming visit to the city, arguing in areleased Thursday that a non-essential visit during a pandemic would set a bad example and that the event would saddle the city with a steep price tag.Marvin Joseph/TThe Washington Post via Getty ImagesWednesday that he would be visiting Baltimore’s Fort McHenry National Monument on Monday for a Memorial Day ceremony.
Young had said he would not be attending the event, but now he is going one step further by asking Trump to cancel it entirely. “Dear Mr. President, please stay home! The City of Baltimore is currently under a Stay at Home order for the safety of our residents, who have been hit hard by #COVID19,” YoungThe statement argues that Trump would be sending the “wrong message” by making a nonessential trip as the city’s lockdown measure bans such movement for ordinary citizens.
Young also noted that Baltimore “requires personnel and equipment,” and argued that the cost of the event would be too great at a time when the city “is still dealing with the loss of roughly $20 million in revenue per month.”The visit comes as part of an effort by Trump to make more in-person visits and get back on the campaign trail.
