University Hospitals Birmingham is named as the trust that looked after Sudiksha Thirumalesh.

The teenager had wanted to finance a trip to Canada for nucleoside therapy but, in August, a judge ruled that she could not make the decision for herself, because she did not have the mental capacity.

Doctors said her breathing difficulties were due to her deteriorating mitochondrial disease weakening her muscles, rather than long Covid or other infections that she had.At the High Court hearing on Friday the judge expressed his condolences to Ms Thirumalesh's family saying: "As they sat courteously in court, the distress of ST's mother in particular was palpable.

The spokesperson described her illness as "incurable and progressive: there was no known treatment that would be effective", adding it was unclear whether Ms Thirumalesh would have been well enough to make the journey to North America even if a placement and funding had been confirmed. Ms Thirumalesh was diagnosed with the same condition as Charlie Gard, a baby from London, whose life support was withdrawn in 2017.
