The scammer had already stolen £1,000 from the customer, and hoped to trick his way into taking moreThe fraudster called TSB, the institution his victim banks with, to coerce the case-handler into unblocking the account he had stolen money from in an attempt to steal further funds.On the call, the fraud specialist tells the scammer they can only unblock the account by going into a TSB branch, which the scammer claims he has already done.
But crucially, he pronounces Aberystwyth incorrectly and gets the distance between the customer he is impersonating’s home and the branch wrong, immediately confirming to the TSB fraud call-handler that he is a scammer.When she tells him that he “will have to go into a TSB branch with photo ID”, he begins to become threatening and aggressive.He firstly calls her a “stupid weirdo” and a “witch” before asking a bizarre series of questions, including whether she has any dead relatives.
He eventually admits he is a fraudster and taunts the woman on the phone, by claiming to live in a penthouse and questioning her earnings.The scammer had previously committed an impersonation scam and convinced the customer into giving access to his account. TSB spotted and prevented fraudulent payments and locked the account and has since refunded £1,000 under its Fraud Refund Guarantee.
“The scammer clearly uses an array of tricks to try and get round our fraud defences – and hoping to persuade our operative to unblock the account,” he said.
