Event organizers aimed to close a gap in annual breast cancer screenings exacerbated by the pandemic
While in-between mammogram appointments last year, 90-year-old Mission Valley resident Reggie Smith was checking for signs of breast cancer during a monthly self-exam when she felt a lump.
“That’s why it’s so important to spend 15 minutes getting a mammogram because the end result of not doing it and getting breast cancer means serious involvement for not just days, but weeks and months,” said Smith, a patient advocate for the San Diego American Indian Health Center. “Anyone who has experienced chemo or radiation knows that that is far more serious than 15 minutes of getting a mammogram.
While the San Diego American Indian Health Center serves patients of all racial backgrounds, about a third of its nearly 6,000 patients are Native American and Alaska Natives. That includes Yolanda Morales, a Lemon Grove resident from the Pechanga Band of Indians in Riverside County. “My first cousin got breast cancer,” Morales said. “My sister also got cervical cancer, so I thought I better hurry up, get over here and get checked.”vary among Native AmericanThose in the Southern and Northern plains and in Alaska have the highest rates of breast cancer, whereas those in the Southwest and on the East Coast have the lowest rates.
