The survey was conducted by phone and online questionnaires and showed that 51% of the respondents felt this way about the significance of Memorial Day. It is information that should make everyone disappointed.
Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor the brave souls who served in the military and gave this country the greatest sacrifice so that we could live ours. The reason such surveys can exist in the first place, the reason that 49% of the country is even allowed not to consider Memorial Day important, and the reason we even have a Memorial Day holiday, is solely because of their valor.Conversely, in another poll, 80% of people felt Memorial Day was the “unofficial start of summer.
On the one hand, the results of these polls are little more than the pitfalls of human nature of hedonistic pursuits. On the other hand, it arguably reveals that if our country and people are to remain the beacon of all that is good in the world, we probably need to reprioritize certain societal values. A great society must adhere to certain standards and values to remain great. Not taking what previous generations sacrificed for granted is a core tenet of such principles.
Let our nation’s people hopefully begin a transition toward a time in which 80% of people value the significance of Memorial Day while only 51% are concerned with it being the start of the summer season.
