The Record Sport columnist believes even the Rangers greats of days gone by needed some counsel
Steven Gerrard was one of the biggest names in football yet when he was in charge at Rangers, he saw the benefit in sitting down and listening to Walter Smith’s words of wisdom.
Beale is extremely experienced as a coach, he’s been honing his methods for 20 years and was by Gerrard’s side when he was in charge. But there’s simply nothing that can prepare you for being the main man at a club like Rangers. It’s been tough for the manager and he’s going to have to stand strong if he’s to survive this next wee spell. It’s tough on the players too, with the burden now weighing heaviest on his captain’s shoulders.
Listen, I hated losing and of course it has an impact on your life away from football. My family soon learned the best way to deal with me after a defeat was to leave me alone for 24-48 hours. I’d go home, lock myself away and brood on it. And I’d always come to the realisation that the only way out of this was to train harder and then take that attitude into the next game and prove that I could still dominate a match.
That’s the approach I tried to follow, even if folk would call me a moany-faced wee b*****d! There would be arguments with team-mates but that’s how I felt I could get the best out of myself and them. Tav has his way. He’s obviously not a ranter and a raver but leads in his own style. Of course there are now folk out there saying he should be stood down from the role. That’s just a cop-out for me. I’ve had that debate plenty of times lately and I just think that solves nothing. Taking the armband off him won’t make the strikers up front look more lively, it won’t solve the recruitment issues that have led the team to where it is or help Beale settle on a consistent line-up.
