Niebla, who guided Cy Young winner Blake Snell, has become one of the most respected pitching coaches in MLB
In the front yard of Ruben Niebla's childhood home, a small rectangular patch of grass served as a baseball infield. In the carefree days before a fence was installed and a tree grew high in the approximate spot where the mound would be, outfielders fanned out along John Kennedy Street as balls made from tape or socks whistled through the neighborhood.
They wanted to keep things on the down low to not bring attention to it. 'It was a safe place per se, which is a little bit weird to say.' The pull and gravitational force of excitement and money lures too many young people into dark corners in cities like this. Though Niebla surely felt that, something stronger kept him on track. A game? It's more for some. 'Kids find ways across the border, go to strip clubs and get in trouble,' Jose said.
