Martín’s Double Bass Concerto No. 1 will be performed three times this week by the San Diego Symphony. Kurtz-Harris is the featured soloist.

When San Diego Symphony principal bassist Jeremy Kurtz-Harris performs Double Bass Concerto No. 1 this week, it will fulfill a longtime goal and symbolize a 16-year binational friendship. The concerto was written by sought-after composer-bassist Andrés Martín, principal bassist of the Orquesta de Baja California.

“The concerto I’m going to perform, Andrés actually wrote 10 years ago. He was sending me demos of it — casual computer files with him playing bass and the neighbor’s dog barking. It was fun seeing it coming together. Then I got to see the concerto’s premiere by Orquesta de Baja California in 2012.” “After doing some collaborations, Jeremy and I realized we liked the personality of each other,” recalled Martín, speaking from Phoenix, where he was visiting friends and teaching classes. “Over the years, we have been friends outside of music, too. We have many commonalities; the biggest one is the bass. We share an expressive approach to music and performance.”“Andrés and I feel similarly about communicating,” he said.

“It has a unique voice, one that can be a beautiful solo instrument. ‘Solo’ doesn’t mean flashy — it doesn’t need to be louder or brighter, but it can communicate.” Back at work now, Kurtz-Harris has also resumed his longtime collaboration with local pianist Ines Irawati. The duo has played pieces composed by Martín, including a duo version of Double Bass Concerto No. 1.Like Kurtz-Harris, Martín — also in his early 40s — wears several hats. The Argentine-born Tijuana resident has been the principal bassist in the Orquesta de Baja California for 20 years.

“I found a balance of my personalities. All my rock influences were present in my music, even when I wasn’t looking for it.”
