Hundreds of thousands of ballots remained unprocessed around the Bay Area nearly a week after the Nov. 8 election, keeping many key races in suspense.

Four of the Bay Area’s highest profile election contests — mayor’s races in San Jose, Oakland and Santa Clara and the sheriff’s race in Santa Clara County — remained much too close to call Monday evening, but in each contest the trailing candidates are running out of time and votes to close the gap.

In Oakland, a relatively slow vote count — perhaps just half the total has been tallied so far — has stymied predictions. But Council Member Loren Taylor has more than a four-percentage point advantage over Council Member Sheng Thao in a ranked-choice simulation of the latest totals for the city’s mayor.

“I am grateful to the people of San Jose and deeply appreciate the engagement of so many in our community in the election process,” Chavez said Monday evening. Gillmor had 12,241 votes to Becker’s 11,670, a 571-vote lead. Nearly 24,000 votes have been counted so far.
