The Bikers Dave and Si take a trip around Merseyside and visit Chris’s chippy to try his delicious salt and pepper chips
As part of their new BBC series, The Hairy Bikers Go West, celebrity chefs Dave Myers and Si King are visiting Liverpool and Wirral for episode four which airs on Tuesday, February 27. Throughout their series Dave and Si are trying out the very best food on offer in each location and in Merseyside, that includes food from the Chinese community.
As demand increased for the new Scouse-Chinese hybrid dish, restaurants started to offer it on their menus. During the Hairy Bikers' Merseyside episode, Dave and Si head to Chris's chippy to give their own take on salt and pepper chips. Now, 55 years on, Chris's is run by Tony and Costa Moustoukas, the second generation sons of this chippy dynasty. The menu has changed a lot over the decades, from offering the likes of just fish, fish cakes, pies, peas and curry sauce in the early days to now boasting an extensive menu offering Chinese dishes, Thai dishes, kebabs, burgers and more.
They've also served famous faces from Ken Dodd and The Real Thing to former LFC goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar, actor John Gregson and Hollywood star Shirley MacLaine. Liverpool has one of the oldest established Chinese communities in Europe, which is apparent in the ever growing Chinatown and foodie offerings on the docks.
