Contender from Mobile paid some dues in an unusual college program

which means we should see more of him now that Hollywood Week is upon us. As fans look forward to his next performance, it’s also a good time to look back at what made him an “Idol” contender. That means paying a visit to the University of Mobile, a Baptist-affiliated institution with about 2,000 students.

uring the pandemic but Roger Breland, executive director of the group, reckons that during Tyler’s four years at UM he probably performed 500 shows, traveling all over the United States and abroad as well. “It was kind of a no-brainer, really, once we heard him,” said Breland. But there was more to it, he added.

In Allen, they said, they found a student who was outgoing but a little reserved -- until it was his time to shine. “He’s a very kind personality. He’s not pushy,” said Breland. “He meets and greets really well. … He never meets a stranger, but something happens when he hits the stage.” “It becomes obvious when there’s a particular song that platforms a guy like Tyler,” said Breland. “And that song happened to be called, ‘Wanna Be Happy.’ As of this moment it has 12,800,000 Facebook views. It’s a song we did every evening, and it was Tyler’s song.”

That platform isn’t always just for singing. The people in Voices of Mobile and the other UM ensembles aren’t all music or production majors. They don’t all go on to careers in those fields. “Some of our finest members have not been our best soloists,” said Breland. “We’re training leaders.”
