'There has been a massive increase of referrals to the counselling service'
Ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day next week, a Belfast group has launched an initiative to raise awareness on the issue that has torn through their community.
Speaking to Belfast Live, Michael Doherty, centre manager at Glen Parent Community Complex said: "There has been a massive decrease in funding to the service, and that is coinciding with an increase of referrals. "While we are doing this on September 10, which is World Suicide Prevention Day, we would love people to do this more regularly. We will have counsellors available on the day so that if people open up and something is troubling them, there are professions there who will be able to help."
Paul Niblock, from Glen Parent, told Belfast Live that their services for young people soared over the summer months. Multiple trips, morning and afternoon sessions, and weekend services provided safe spaces for the young people who were aged up to 18. "We didn't let that stop us, and we did what we needed to do - and the feedback from parents and the young people was incredible."
"We believe that the u13 age group in particular is important - some of them are going into big school and have through that transition. The area in which we live, we want to help to support and promote the services that are here.
