'I have had to overcome a few things to get to this point but mum always said I could do anything if I put my mind to it and I know she will be cheering me on.'
A Belfast student will be pounding the city's pavements this Sunday for a cause very dear to her heart.
"We were told it was very aggressive and her life expectancy was very short. Due to the position of the cancer she received a full tracheostomy when the operation to remove the tumour was unsuccessful. She couldn't eat or speak and so was fed through a rig. "As my sister and I were very busy and in school we came up to visit her for a few hours in the evening. She was home for Christmas but became very poorly on 1st January and was rushed to hospital.
"Nobody gave up until pain or the current problem had subsided. Over the six weeks mum spent in the hospice she showed incredible strength and always smiled no matter how much pain she was in. "My mum's sister and I weren't allowed to leave the hospice at all as we were there beyond visiting hours. We don't think mum knew any of this was even going on.
"This very small gathering was originally supposed to be in our house but this then wasn't allowed. We facetimed a close relative who was sitting in a car outside the church as he couldn't even come in. She added: "My friends found that they didn't know how to support me as the only way of contact was through a phone and I didn't want to speak much.
"One of the social workers who I was friendly with calls me most weeks to check up on me which I have found very helpful in this time but it’s not the same as face to face conversations.
