What is known as El Castillo de Benidorm but no longer exists is on the tip of the old town where it enters the sea. It was built in the 14century. This is not your typical touristy Benidorm but feels more like a Spanish resort town. The faithful return year after year for the clean beaches that consistently win blue flags, the warm arid climate, and the gastronomy, according to surveys by Visit Benidorm, which works with the tourist authorities. Some get to know the staff at particular hotels and book year after year.
Pedro Zaragoza, mayor of Benidorm in the 1950s, realised tourism was the only way to save what was then a dying village that had been deserted by the tuna upon which its fishermen depended. The hills behind the town that I’d been exploring by bike prevented expansion, so he hit upon the idea of building a vertical city. With hot summers and mild winters, the new resort would also have year-round appeal.
High-spending tourists are the target for the city’s tourism chiefs for the simple reason they will spend more money and raise the quality of the resort.
