Sen. Bernie Sanders pleaded with his supporters to back Joe Biden for president and urged them to recognize the progress his wing of the party has made turning “radical” ideas mainstream in his convention speech on Monday night, a departure from his speech of 2016 which was received more as a farewell address, than an embrace of Hillary Clinton.
The Vermont senator said the progressive movement is “getting stronger every day” and “many of the ideas...that just a few years ago were considered ‘radical,’ are now mainstream.” Sanders capped off his speech by pleading with Democratic voters to “come together” and “elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as our next president and vice president.”
Sander’s 2016 convention speech came after a bitter primary between Clinton and Sanders in which the Vermont senator refused to concede for months and endorsed his opponent just days before the convention. to a chorus of boos from his supporters upset with his endorsement of Clinton. Instead of prodding his supporters to “come together” with the moderate wing of the party, Sanders only tacitly urged unity, and spoke about bread-and-butter issues like “moving the United States toward universal health care.”“It is no secret that Hillary Clinton and I disagree on a number of issues,” Sanders said during his 2016 convention speech. The Vermont senator went on to claim there was a “significant coming together” between the two wings on key issues.
