Bertagnolli’s candidacy is stalled indefinitely, caught up in a standoff between the administration and Sen. Bernie Sanders over Biden’s drug pricing agenda. Biden has been without a permanent NIH director for a year-and-a-half, alarming medical research groups who believe it’s critical to have a confirmed leader ahead of looming budget negotiations on Capitol Hill — as well to provide stability at a time when public health agencies are under increasing political scrutiny.
No hearing has been held. Instead, Sanders insists he feels no pressure to move on Bertagnolli’s nomination as long his requests remain unmet, telling POLITICO “the public is probably more on my side.” “The President shares the Senator’s concerns on drug pricing,” the White House spokesperson said, calling the IRA “the most consequential law addressing the high cost of prescription drugs.”
