BetterCallSaul's Nacho Varga actor, Michael Mando, reacts to the similarities between his character and Jesse Pinkman from BreakingBad, and praises the opportunity to play someone who is 'really going from dark to light.'
Better Call Saul star Michael Mando reacts to the similarities between Nacho Varga and Breaking Bad character Jesse Pinkman. After an action-packed season 5 finale, Better Call Saul's sixth and final season premiered last week on AMC. Boasting a longer episode count than previous seasons, season six is divided into two parts, with the first seven episodes releasing every Monday until the mid-season finale on May 23rd, and the final batch of episodes expected to start airing in early July.
The first episode of Better Call Saul season 6 picks up not long after the events of the season 5 finale, seeing Nacho on the run after the failed compound assault against Lalo Salamanca . Although Nacho earned Lalo's trust throughout season five and became a close ally, Lalo is now aware of Nacho's betrayal and his secret partnership with Gus Fring .
"To play a character who’s breaking good when the full current of the scripts are breaking bad, it positions you with tremendous pressure, but it’s so rewarding despite the pain, frustration and torment of the character. Because deep down, at its core, you know you’re doing the right thing. You’re standing up for virtue, and in a show about morality, you’re one of the only characters, if not the only character, who’s really going from dark to light.
Like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul follows a protagonist who journeys from light to dark over the course of the show. Although Walter White came to do horrible things over the course of Breaking Bad, Jesse, who started out as something of a"loser," eventually became a moral compass of sorts, which mirrors Nacho's own arc. El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie sees Jesse atone for his past mistakes, eventually riding off into the sunset, so to speak, with a clean conscious.
The character of Nacho Varga is only mentioned once in passing on Breaking Bad, however, which has led many viewers to surmise that the character may not survive the events of Better Call Saul. While Jesse ultimately comes out of Breaking Bad alive, albeit emotionally and physically scarred, it's still entirely possible that, despite Nacho's bad-to-good arc, the character dies before the show's conclusion.
