The appraisal district on Tuesday reported a record number of more than 155,000 protests that have been filed on 2022 appraisals.Michael Amezquita, chief appraiser of the Bexar Appraisal District, will retire early next year.

Amezquita has spent his entire career in property appraisals, working as Cameron County’s chief appraiser before being recruited to San Antonio two decades ago.He’s the person responsible for the annual notices that homeowners, landlords, business owners and real estate owners get telling them how much the value of their property has gone up or down, a process that subjects him to criticism from city and county elected officials and residents, especially as values have spiked in recent years.
