The study being done by UT Health Houston will cost taxpayers $100,000. County commissioners hope the 15-month study will provide recommendations on how to improve communication within the criminal justice system. That was the consensus across the board when Bexar County commissioners approved the study. Commissioner Moody says this investment is nominal to the hundreds of millions spent on law enforcement and the court system.
Over the past week, there have been 2 officers involved in shootings. One of them involved a man who had no priors, but the other involved a repeat offender. Several officers have been shot at and injured in recent months, with three incidents happening in August and another in September. Dr. Testa is heading up the study and was grilled by Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai during his presentation at commissioner’s court Tuesday.Dr. Testa explained his team will evaluate all the different groups that work within the Bexar County Justice Intake and Assessment Annex from the District Attorney’s Office to University Health Services. In the end, the hope is to understand how all the groups work together.
