In space, no-one can hear you scream, according to Ridley Scott’s 1979 space horror“Beyond the Sea”, the third – and certainly the best – episode of the new sixth series of Charlie Brooker’sWe’re transported back to the 60s and introduced to two very different men: David Ross is a genteel man who likes to draw and watch movies, and who is endlessly devoted to his wife and children.
In an out-of-character moment of kindness, Cliff offers his replica to David so he can breathe fresh air and enjoy blue skies for the first time in months. His visit turns into a weekly venture, each trip an opportunity to work on a painting of Cliff and Lana’s beautiful country house – and slowly fall in love with Lana. And so “Beyond the Sea” transforms from a retro-futuristic space adventure into a cuckoo’s nest familial thriller, the stunning ending of which had me weeping in disbelief.
