Investigators believe the driver was possibly distracted by the police chase that had just come to an end at the intersection and did not see the woman in the road.
A woman is dead after she was hit and killed by a driver near the scene of the end of a police chase on Houston's westside.
According to Harris County Pct. 1, a truck owner reported his tailgate stolen before 5 a.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Omar Street in the Woodland Heights neighborhood. When the suspect spotted the deputies, he took off, sparking a chase, Pct. 1 said. The 30-minute chase came to a end when the suspect, who was driving a silver Ford SUV, crashed into a driver who managed to pull onto Westheimer at Hillcroft, even though the road was blocked.Both the theft suspect and the driver he hit were taken to the hospital after the crash, deputies said. They are both expected to survive.
"The driver was headed eastbound on Westheimer and struck a cyclist who was actually in this first lane. She was actually not pedaling, she was parked, basically," Christina Simpson with HPD said.
