Under intense political pressure from fellow Democrats, the Biden administration has announced it is granting protection to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans who are already in the country.
Breaking news surrounding the surge on the southern border, the Biden administration is clearing the way for thousands of Venezuelan migrants to get work permits by expanding Temporary Protected Status to refugee seekers. Some politicians and organizations are applauding the decision, residents in New York are continuing to protest plans to house some migrants and asylum seekers inside a former senior living facility.
That's in addition to about 242,700 Venezuelans who already qualified for temporary status before Wednesday's announcement. Venezuelans who arrive in the U.S. after July 31 of this year will not be eligible for the protection. Those who are now eligible have to apply to get it.
