The proposal scales back a Trump-era plan that called for dozens of offshore drilling opportunities, including in undeveloped areas.

The Biden administration on Friday proposed up to 10 oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and one off the Alaska coast over the next five years, scaling back a Trump-era plan that called for dozens of offshore drilling opportunities, including in undeveloped areas.

The Interior Department had suspended lease sales in late January because of climate concerns but was forced to resume them by a U.S. district judge in Louisiana. The Biden administration cited conflicting court rulings about that decision when it canceled the last three lease sales of the previous offshore leasing cycle. There will be a months-long gap before a new plan can be put in place.

Biden administration drilling plan may exclude all waters beyond Gulf of MexicoBiden administration drilling plan may exclude all waters beyond Gulf of MexicoThe U.S. Interior Department has recommended to the White House that all federal offshore oil and gas drilling auctions over the next five years be located in the Gulf of Mexico, where the drilling industry has already been focused for decades, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The recommendation to exclude all other waters from offshore oil and gas development comes as U.S. President Joe Biden seeks to balance his goal to transition the country away from fossil fuels against a Congressional requirement to hold regular drilling auctions, and intense political pressure to boost energy supplies to ease soaring inflation. The Biden administration is due to unveil the proposed five-year offshore development plan on Thursday, as mandated by a Congressional deadline.
