The Biden administration plans to tell nursing homes to vaccinate their staffs against Covid-19 or risk losing federal funding, officials said
President Biden intends to announce the directive on Wednesday. The administration plans to issue a new regulation through the Department of Health and Human Services that would make Medicare and Medicaid funding for nursing homes conditional on their staffs being vaccinated. The new requirements, which will be drafted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, could take effect as early as next month, the officials said.
The regulation would affect more than 15,000 nursing homes that employ roughly 1.3 million workers, one of the officials said.driven by the Delta variant sends cases in nursing homes higher again. As of Aug. 1, 82.4% of nursing-home residents per facility were vaccinated, CMS data show. But only 60% of nursing-home workers are vaccinated.
