The 57-year-old, who has dubbed himself 'the bionic MP' after receiving new prosthetic limbs, was given a standing ovation after being welcomed back.

Craig Mackinlay was today applauded in the House of Commons as he returned to Parliament for the first time since losing his hands and feet to a horror illness.

'The other person in this chamber I would like to thank is the Prime Minister, who has been with me throughout,' Mr Mackinlay added. The Tory MP for Thanet South joked that he had broken many Commons rules with his arrival - MPs are not meant to clap - and apologised for wearing trainers and no jacket, because he had not been able to get smart shoes and a jacket over his prostheses.

Mr Mackinlay initially thought he just had a cold, but Kati - a pharmacist - became more concerned for his health until she could not even feel a pulse on his stone cold arms. 'Craig, it's so good to have you back amongst us, you are the man of the moment and I met your daughter who is going to be the daughter of the moment with her birthday tomorrow.

Mr Mackinlay was pictured being driven to Parliament earlier by his wife Kati as he displayed his new prosthetic limbs Ahead of his return to Parliament, Mr Mackinlay detailed the harrowing episode in full - including waking up in St Thomas's Hospital to find his limbs had turned black. He woke up from a 16-day induced coma in November with completely blackened limbs, due to the clots and lack of circulation caused by his illness.

'The bionic MP is what I want to be. When children come up to Parliament and go to the gallery or go to the school section that Parliament does very well, I want children to be tugging on their mother's coats and saying, 'I want to see the bionic MP today'. That's what I want to do.' Former immigration minister Robert Jenrick posted: 'An exceptionally brave man. Look forward to welcoming you back to Westminster.''His bravery and strength, and that of his wife Kati and daughter Olivia, is incredible.'

Speaking to GB News, he said: 'The price I'm going to pay for living is some quite serious disability.'The Kent MP started feeling unwell on September 27 but thought it was no worse than the beginnings of a cold, and he even took a Covid test which came back negative.
