We visited Birkenhead, to see if people would be happy paying more in tax for better public services.
With taxation being at the forefront of political debate, we visited Birkenhead, to see if people would be happy paying more in tax in order to have better public services.
The 54-year-old said: “Birkenhead is on the decline, all the shops that used to be here have all gone and don’t seem to be replaced with anything. So, if you’re a local person looking to go shopping, you’d go to Liverpool as there’s nothing in Birkenhead anymore”. Aeron also stressed that the tax burden needs to be fairer. He said: “We have far too many people avoiding tax in this country, including the super-rich. They should be paying. They’re citizens in this area, they should be paying just like we do and we'd see the benefit.”
Another Birkenhead resident, Alan Brighouse, 77, said: “I think that inevitably, which ever government gets in after the next election, there will have to be an increase in public spending.” Paul Hutchinson, 59, believed that tax cuts would only hinder public services. He said: “Social care is a can that has been kicked down the road quite often. That’s something that the parties are not addressing very openly. Defence spending is critical although it’s not very popular with the voters.”
Ella London, 40, emphasised the need to protect the most vulnerable in society. She said: “I think it’s a combination of tax cuts and continued public spending because I think that people who need support should continue to have support and have that support increased as needed.”
