Dr. Brett Tyler Wahlgren, a former UAB anesthesiologist, claimed she was injured by the knife while he attempted to take his own life.
A Birmingham doctor has been convicted of first-degree domestic violence in an attack on a woman with whom he was in a relationship.
Authorities said the 41-year-old Wahlgren on March 19 attacked the victim by throwing the top of a bourbon barrel and a chair at her before repeatedly punching her in the face and slamming her head against a granite countertop. Wahlgren testified that the victim was injured by the knife while in the process of him attempting to take his own life.
