White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx visited Tennessee and pleaded with the state’s mayors to mandate mask-wearing in public, after Gov. Bill Lee said that he will not issue a statewide mask mandate and continues to keep bars and restaurants open while 91% of the state’s counties are above the acceptable virus transmission level.
Along with masks, Birx also advised that bars should close and restaurants should limit indoor dining and implement social distancing measures. 87 of the state’s 95 counties are above the acceptable threshold for Covid-19 transmission rates—a 14% week-over-week increase, according toCovid-19 is rising at an alarming rate in Tennessee; the state reported 2,871 new cases on July 26 with a 7-day average of 2,164 new cases per day.
